Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning)

Teeth Cleaning

Preventive dentistry is the cornerstone of our practice.  A prophylaxis is a thorough dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar.  Removing plaque and tartar is essential to preventing gingivitis and periodontal disease.  We recommend two dental prophylaxes each year, with bitewing x-rays performed at one visit.  X-rays allow us to not only diagnose any decay present, but also examine the health of your gums and bone.

At Dentistry in the Pines we also perform a Periodontal Prophylaxis.  This is done when plaque bacteria colonize both above and below the gum line.  It is important that we remove this bacteria before the periodontal disease progresses, as it can lead to gum and bone loss. Untreated periodontal disease can not only lead to tooth loss, it can cause systemic inflammation of your whole body.

Dental X-Rays

We are often asked are dental x-rays necessary and are they safe.  Dental x-rays are an essential diagnostic tool.  Dental x-rays are used to diagnose many conditions:

  • Decay between the teeth
  • Cysts or abscesses
  • Bone loss
  • Possible tumors

At Dentistry in the Pines, we use digital x-rays which greatly limits the amount of radiation our patients are exposed to.  The amount of radiation exposure during routine x-rays is comparable to a one-hour plane ride.

Dental Sealants

The chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars have pits, grooves and fissures making them more difficult to clean and therefore more prone to decay.  The placement of Dental Sealants help to protect the tooth and prevent decay.  These sealants are not only for children they can also be used to protect adult teeth with the same pits, grooves and fissures.
